A lot of people are saying that Liu should’ve been Sherlock instead of Watson. And they’re right, it would’ve been awesome for all the reasons they list. But here’s my two cents about why I’m super happy that she’s Watson instead.

Really great commentary, the only thing I’m wary about is the “buffoonish Oppa Gangnam Style” part. I’m not sure whether the OP is referring to PSY or the type of people PSY describes in his song, but if it’s the former, that’s a horrible and inaccurate description of him. I won’t say more until I figure out what exactly the OP is talking about, but I just wanted to put that out there.
Solid read, nonetheless. It’s very clear that at least in this adaptation of Sherlock Holmens, Watson is not just a sidekick. She came into the relationship carrying her own weight and shouldering responsibilities much bigger than Sherlock’s own. Ands much as Sherlock tries to deny it, Sherlock’s sobriety is (in many ways) her responsibility; if push ever comes to shove, he will be dependent on her.
Elementary is about Sherlock and Watson, not Sherlock (and Watson). The fact that a woman of color (Asian-American, to be more precise) is half of the partnership - the bigger, so to speak, half - makes it all the more special, significant, and a truly solid piece of programming (thus far).
I get the feeling the OP is describing PSY’s persona in the video and how white people will read/interpret it and god, if strangers walk up to me and start dancing Oppan Gangnam Style just because I’m Asian I will punch their fucking lights out. Metaphorically.
